Born in Istanbul, 1980, Nur Gürel graduated from Istanbul Anatolian Fine Arts High School and proceeded with her undergraduate studies in Department of Arts at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, before completing her postgraduate studies in the same department.
Gürel is interested in all impositions that render the society into a consumption society and their results. Her biggest instrument on this subject is manipulation. While she uses landscape picture wallpapers as material in decoration in previous work, she includes photographs, magazines, posters and billboard advertisings to her already visual images in her later works. Gürel aims to create tension in her work by using contrasts, such as: inside-outside, photo-painting, digital printing-painting, town-forest, thin-fat, and life-death. This intervenes the image with a primitive sensitivity and hands rather than digitally. In this way, sterilized advertising language is broken and becomes natural. Subjects vary according to what is desired to be manipulated. Gürel, describing her art as a manipulation on visual image, lives in Istanbul and continues to create.
