Farhad Gavzan

Farhad Gavzan is an Iranian artist. He primarily practices in drawing. Farhad graduated from the Faculty of Arts and Architecture in Tehran, Iran. The artist obtained a BA in Painting. The artist also holds an MA in Painting from the Art University of Tehran. Farhad has a prominent career in the arts. The artist published three books featuring a collection of his drawings. And Farhad continues to hold specialised talk and seminars regarding drawing. Farhad established the Drawing House. The artist aimed to provide opportunities for emerging and established artists. Doing so by employing various media to explore ideas around contemporary drawing. And also by making artists visible in the public domain. In 2017, Farhad founded the Drawing Museum. A non-profit organisation that aims to bring everyone closer to art.

Farhad Gavzan predominantly builds on the arts and crafts of his native land. This allows the artist to create authentic and original contemporary drawings. Historically, Iranian calligraphers would achieve a meditative perfection of their craft. While creating an abstract work of art through “Siah-Mashq”. This is in essence a rote learning technique. The calligrapher would repeat the same letter many times over to achieve technical perfection. This repetitive process also leads the calligrapher on an inward journey. At the end of this journey, they will also achieve inner peace. Calligraphy was considered sacred. Since it was often utilised for writing religious texts. Or even writing the Koran. Farhad’s drawings are contemporary in depiction. The drawings often resemble abstract renditions of organic matter. They are nevertheless rooted in the arts of Iran. Especially calligraphy. Farhad follows the same meditative path in his large vertical abstracts as the calligraphers. His approach is to repeat the primary patterns to create the final artwork.
