Dasha Rybina is a Ukranian artist, born in 1983. She graduated from Donetsk Art School with distinction (2004) and then studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture, receiving a silver medal for her piece ‘Ordeals of Theophanes the Greek’ (Kiev, 2010). Having painted since she was young, Rybina has developed a mastery of colour and composition beyond her years.

During her experimentation, Rybina developed a technique which she names ‘Ink and Shower’; this involves ink being specially applied to large sheets of paper before being washed off with water streams. The result is a kind of relief reminiscent of historic photographs, which emphasise the contours and textures of her subjects while also subtly reimagining them. More recently, Rybina has been using increasing amounts of colour and complementary tones within her work, softening their appearance and focusing more on domestic, intimate scenes rather than on the monumental. Her paintings gently draw the viewer into their range, and invite personal interpretations of their meaning.

In a time of great difficulty and uncertainty, Rybina’s paintings subtly comment on the world, exhibiting both its beauties and its flaws. She is able to use few brushstrokes to indicate masses of detail, creating works that evoke a strong feeling of place through simple and effective techniques.
