My work has no grand narrative. I’m not interested in the human form or depictions of animals. What does interest me is the power of what paint can achieve. For me it’s not what is painted but how.

Painting that has an emotional pull. How the paint is applied to canvas; aggressive marks, the layering and the use of space. My work doesn’t try to conform or to give answers but raises more questions.
In this present time of information and the immediate ability to get answers, I’m fascinated by the obscure, the hidden, the unexplained.

I have no desire to create the same painting over and over again. I’m on a journey, the destination is not known and I hope I never reach it.

On the 11th of December 2020, Blue Rhino Arts Consultancy will present Misdemeanour a solo online exhibition of British artist Ian Rayer-Smith. This exhibition will bring to display 29 of the artist’s most recent artworks, most of which was created during the year 2020. The exhibition will convey the artist, as a contemporary expressionist exploring paint, acrylic and oil, in its primal material form and as a medium for expression. The obscure, the hidden, the unexplained.
