Hannes Schauer is an Austrian artist.
I am a painter, yet come from arts, crafts & design. Working with many different materials such as wood, glass, metal, enamel and ceramics was part of my degree. Drawing was there from early childhood on. Painting followed naturally and is the center of my daily practice as an artist today. The fascination for the production of electronic music popped up in my early twenties and pushed aside painting for a number of years. To this day, my exhibitions are often accompanied by musical performances.
Painting is like a secret code to me. It is my way of connecting and sharing, of passing on truth, being genuine and literally showing my true colors.
There is no fixed, determined or definite starting point. I am not interested in the classic work process of a painter where you start with an idea, followed by sketches and finally paint. I start with a flare-up, sometimes followed by an eruption but always leading to a transition, a before and an after. Two moments in time which are distinctive. I add and subtract, repaint and scratch off until everything I could avoid, I did.
My work ranges from abstraction to concreteness. It is characterized by my permission to being different every time. The materials I use range from acrylic and oil paint to sea weed and tomato paste. There are no limitations or special requirements for materials to be allowed into my body of work. My approach is often raw and rough, suggestive yet determined. by using and combining materials, styles, colors and forms that don’t always look like they should go together, I encourage conversation, a re-thinking, a remapping, which I consider hugely important in these polarizing times.
